Pattern Update: The Darcy Coat

New shorter length is now available!

The Darcy Coat has had a fresh new pattern update!

I love the Darcy Coat for its endless varieties and opportunities to turn it into a completely different garment every time you make it. This newsletter features six Darcy Coats and they're all so different they could be cut from different patterns.

We released the Darcy Coat in the autumn of 2022 and it has become a firm favourite for outerwear. As part of our Capsule Course we sewed a shorter version but due to the facing and lining construction it wasn't straightforward to adjust the length and width. So we thought it was time to do a pattern update to include a shorter version alongside the full length option.

Along with adding a new length option we made a couple of other tweaks, including adding a less pointed collar option and including the gusset pocket pattern with the download. I thought I'd share a bit about the options that make this piece so customisable:

  • The pattern now comes with two length options, one full length (as shown in the navy waxed cotton and green coats) and a shorter option (as shown with the denim and grey coats).
  • The wool navy coat and beige 'trench' coat featured below have an additional 20cm of length added as I'm 5'10 and we wanted a FULL length coat for these. You can follow the guide in the 'Using Our Patterns' document that comes with your download to add length to your pattern.
  • There are now THREE pocket options...! Yes that's right. There's the welt pockets, patch pockets and additional gusset pocket which is in a separate document included with the download
  • The pattern has two collar options, the pointed one (as shown in the denim jacket above) or slightly squared off shown in the wool version below
  • The sleeve tab is another area you can customise on - we love using belt loops to create more of a 'trench' coat feel or you can stick to the more minimal poppers and buttons.
  • You can add a lining or leave it unlined depending on the season you're sewing for and your skill level
I will let the gallery below do the rest of the talking but if you fancy digging into the Darcy Coat a bit more you can have a look at these blog posts:

In other news the Capsule Course is off to a flying start with exactly 100 people who joined for this edition! I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone creates and I'll share some of the progress on the way.
