Bringing Back Lost Traditions

Bringing back lost traditions

Before we closed the studio for the holidays we asked for your feedback, but this note really touched me:

“Thank you for giving me the confidence I needed to begin sewing clothes at the ripe old age of 70! It's never too late to learn a new skill.”

It’s so heartwarming to hear how we've been a part of your sewing journeys in so many different ways - from rediscovering sewing in retirement to creating garments without any previous sewing experience, regardless of age.

Your kind words about how our designs and workshops have sparked your love of sewing has made me reflect on what this community really means to me and its importance beyond Modern Sewing Co.

Sewing has taken up such a new and exciting space in the creative scene and in society at large. The intergenerational teaching and community of sewing doesn’t exist in the same way it used to.

Sewing used to be an intrinsic part of running a household and was in large part unpaid and undervalued domestic labour predominantly from women. The history of domestic garment making is woven into families and is so personal, but so little of it is archived in the same way other art forms are.

But on the flip side, home sewing was also such an important source of community and a skill that would be passed through generations. Of course, nowadays there isn’t the same need to sew, but that doesn’t mean the sewing community is lost entirely.

The internet has had a huge impact on creating a sewing community that may not be as tight knit as what once existed in homes, but the scale and reach of social media has spread the word of sewing across the world and across all ages.

As we're gearing up for the 2026 Capsule Course, what I'm most excited about is gathering a cohort of sewists who are excited to sew alongside each other, whilst also being across the world. It's kind of crazy to really think about in real terms - but it's also so special!

It’s a space for knowledge sharing as well as encouragement and feedback with no stakes or pressure. In a way, the forum continues a tradition of sewing that doesn’t really exist elsewhere. It’s a space to socialise, to share and sew together.

If you want to improve your sewing skills and create 4 beautiful, high-quality pieces that fit in your wardrobe, enrol to the 2026 Capsule Course before 31st January
