Introducing the Amalie Wrap Dress, our brand new PDF sewing pattern. Last week, it launched as part of The Art of Dress Making Online Workshop, and we've been really touched by your lovely feedback so far.
The third design in our dress collection is a style evolution for us. With a softly structured silhouette, the Amalie is designed to feel refined and feminine - and sit perfectly with the world of the Modern Sewing Co.
As the Northern Hemisphere heads into spring, it feels the perfect time for us to launch something new in the dress department. If you're ready for rays or are planning ahead, here's why Amalie Wrap Dress is the project for you.
Who is This Pattern For?
The Amalie Wrap Dress pattern is ideal for intermediate sewists. If you’ve already taken The Art of Shirt Making or The Art of Trouser Making Online Workshops, this is ideal for building on your existing skills.

The Inspiration
A piece dreamt up collaboratively between our Founder Hetty and expert pattern cutter Hanni, the Amalie Wrap Dress is The Modern Sewing Co.'s take on a really timeless design. Over to Hanni:

Hanni's favourite details of the Amalie Wrap Dress?
"The voluminous three quarter sleeve, the bow at the side and the subtle gathering on the sleeve, skirt and waist. It's comfortable and relaxed, whilst still being elevated and special."
Fabric Recommendations
Since launching last week, we've had lots of interest in the DMs and emails about fabric to make your own wrap dress. For the Amalie, we'd suggest light/mid weight cottons and linens, or silk dupion.
For the blue dress, Ray Stitch kindly gifted us the Essex Linen Mix Chambray - Nautical fabric. We wanted something with a tiny bit more texture and the linen-cotton mix works really nicely as it creases a little less. It's a bit heavier, so more of an autumn fabric - we wanted to show you a different option for another season.
The red/burnt orange poplin is from the Cloth House. It's really crisp and works nicely with the features of the Amalie Wrap Dress. This design really needs to be able to hold itself, the sleeve and bow in particular and this poplin is perfect.
We curated some of our favourite places to shop for fabric here on Instagram. Take a look and you can also find our community's recommendations all around the world, too.
The last word
“The most challenging part of the Amalie Wrap Dress is bagging out the bodice, with the bodice lining, which also catches the raw waist and arm hole seams, finished with hand sewing. It creates a clean finish with no overlocking or raw edges - and is very high quality.”
