Sewing As A Source of Solace

Sunday should be a day of peace, reflection and resetting for the week ahead. If instead you end up scrolling away, as so many of us do, you might find yourself more fretful than prepared.

My solution has always been to lean into the 'material world' - that is, the power of stitch.

This weekend, I found myself reflecting on the role of sewing beyond livening up our wardrobes. In 2021, I started The Modern Sewing Co. in response to the turmoil of the pandemic. In a totally unexpected pivot, I moved from selling fully made clothes to dreaming up PDF patterns and online workshops. Leaning into the slow and meditative process of hand sewing was transformative for me personally and as a business owner - you can read more about my experience here.

With the state of the world feeling so uncertain, finding a pattern that fires up your imagination, selecting the perfect fabric and committing to making something by hand feels almost radical right now. Beyond distraction alone, sewing can become a beautiful self care ritual (and last far longer than a sheet mask!).

In fact, science has long backed the benefits of sewing for stress relief, boosting happiness and providing a tangible sense of accomplishment.

As I sit quietly in the peace of our London studio, surrounded by the workings-out of projects to come, I can certainly vouch for that.
I know I’m not alone in finding peace and purpose in creating.

Over the past almost five years, I've been so touched to see such a beautiful community grow organically around The Modern Sewing Co. From all over the world, your emails, stories, and photographs of your makes are a real source of joy and inspiration. If you’re looking for a new muse, you can find plenty of examples here.

Looking to get out of your head and into your hands? Some of my favourite patterns to get lost in are:
I’d love to see how you get along with them. Please do tag us on Instagram if you give one a try and you could feature in our Monthly Inspiration Boards.
