A Moment for the Worker Trousers

Revisiting a favourite: Making a pair of white Worker Trousers

As often happens, it's the community who inspire me with fresh takes on our patterns and I wanted to share my latest make with you. I saw a lovely make from a customer who made a crisp white pair of worker trousers. I just loved how clean and crisp they looked so I decided to spend a day off making my own.

I used a white cotton typewriter fabric which is a very densely woven, light weight cotton. It's very crisp but a bit heavier than a poplin make it perfect for summer trousers. I love how the simplicity of this fabric and the cut of the Worker Trousers can make a statement without any bells and whistles.

I haven’t made a pair of unmodified Worker Trousers for months and months, so it was a treat to sit down and enjoy sewing without the need for too much brain power. The only modification I made was adding around 5cm of length through the knee.

With sewing a big part of my job it's a rare occasion that I can sit down and sew for pure selfish enjoyment. With Desert Island Discs blaring at an unreasonable volume, my foot on the pedal and a pair of snips in my hand I can mentally reset while creating something great to wear. Which is a very nice way to unwind.

As a habit, I always try to make all the design decisions in one go, so I can get to cutting and sewing in a flow state. For thread colour, I wanted something that doesn’t detract too much from the simple yet bold blank canvas look of the material. I chose a light beige so you can still see the stitching but isn't too distracting. The beautiful button I used is a recycled horn button from the Textile Garden. I chose a zip fastening as I wanted these trousers to feel a bit more utility.

They've immediately become a staple piece in my summer wardrobe, especially with the extra length giving me some room for comfort since I am a bit taller. I intended on wearing them in summer but I already imagine wearing them with a cream knitted jumper during the autumn.

As summer winds down, I feel like now is such a nice time to sit down and re-use a pattern you already love. Rather than constantly making new things and the pressure of using sewing as a learning exercise, the great thing about having a pattern collection is being able to use them again and again, each time building confidence in the skills you’ve already learnt.

We would love to see your makes - whether it's the first time you've used one of our patterns or it's the third pair of worker trousers you've made - and if you include your name or social media tag, we would love to include you in our upcoming Inspiration Board.
