Aspiring dress makers, allow us to introduce you to the Celia Dress. This sewing pattern balances feminine details with The Modern Sewing Co.’s love for classic construction: a collar, lapels, two-piece sleeves, and an optional tie belt. Since we launched it in 2022, it’s been a staple make for our community and more importantly, a really rewarding one that sets you up nicely for future tailoring projects. This deep dive covers everything you need to know before you start sewing your own.
From the fit to the fabrics and the construction techniques you'll use, this is your ultimate guide to sewing the Celia Dress. If you're an intermediate sewist deciding whether this is right next project for you, or if you're already mid-make and want some guidance, read on.
Our Signature Shirt Dress Sewing Pattern
The Celia Dress is a midi-to-ankle length shirt dress with a distinctly tailored feel. The silhouette is shoulder-fitted and gently A-line from the bust down, giving plenty of room and ease through the body without losing its shape. The collar and lapels lend it a smart, considered look, while the gathering details at the shoulder and centre back add softness and movement.
The two-piece sleeve is three-quarter length, whilst the optional tie belt lets you shape the waist when you want to, or wear it loose for a relaxed, unfitted silhouette that’s perfectly breezy in summertime.
Construction Techniques You'll Use
We recommend the Celia Dress as an intermediate make, meaning it's best suited to sewists who have already completed a few garments and feel confident with the basics. That said, the pattern instructions are detailed and illustrated throughout, so it's very achievable if you're an ambitious beginner ready to elevate your skills.
Here are the key construction skills you’ll use when sewing the Celia:
-
Collar and Facings
-
The collar gives the Celia its signature look. You'll construct a full collar with lapels and learn how to attach with facings for a clean, professional finish on the inside of the neckline.
-
-
Two-Piece Sleeve
-
A two-piece sleeve produces a more tailored, fitted arm than a simple set-in sleeve. It looks more complex than it is but once you understand the front and back notches it’s a breeze.
-

-
Double Yoke
-
The double yoke across the back creates a clean interior seam and adds structure to the shoulder area. It's also what helps give the back its lovely gathered detail below.
-
-
Gathering
-
Gathering at the shoulders and centre back creates the softness that lifts the Celia above a plain shirt dress. Getting even gathers is a skill worth taking your time on.
-
-
In Seam Pockets
-
Side pockets are sewn into the side seams using a method specific to this pattern. Take it slowly the first time — once you understand the logic, it becomes straightforward.
-
A note on fit
The Celia fits at the shoulders, so that's the measurement to prioritise when sizing. The A-line cut gives plenty of ease through the bust and waist, so the dress is forgiving through the body once the shoulder fit is right. Sizes run UK 4–28, true to UK sizing.
Want Step by Step Guidance? Try the Celia Dress Workshop
If the construction techniques feel like a lot to navigate solo, the Celia Dress Workshop was designed exactly for that. We created a full online workshop that walks you through the entire make - from fitting perfectly to your body, to choosing your fabric to in-depth sewing steps and finishing the hem - with the same level of instruction you'd get in a class, available to follow at home and your own pace.
The workshop is available from £35 as a standalone purchase if you’ve already purchased the pattern, or at £50 bundled with the PDF pattern. Plus, you’ll have lifetime access, so you can take a break, or return to make a different version again whenever you like. We’ve heard from intermediate makers in our community that the workshop pays for itself quickly in fabric saved from mistakes!
Frequently Asked Questions
What skill level is the Celia Dress sewing pattern?
The Celia Dress is rated intermediate. It suits makers who have completed a few garments and are comfortable with basic techniques. The collar, two-piece sleeve, and facings make it a great step up from beginner projects - and the Celia Dress Workshop is available to support you through every stage.
What fabrics work best for the Celia Dress?
Light to mid-weight wovens work best: cottons, linens, and tencel for a relaxed everyday feel; silk or viscose for occasions; chambray or denim for a casual shirt-dress look; and light wool suiting for a winter version. Avoid fabrics that are too stiff - the gathering details need a fabric that drapes softly.
What sizes does the Celia Dress pattern come in?
The pattern includes sizes 4–28 in UK sizing. The dress is shoulder-fitted, so we recommend sizing for your shoulder measurement. The A-line cut gives plenty of ease through the bust and body.
Is there a video workshop available for the Celia Dress?
Yes, the Celia Dress Workshop is an online class that walks you through the entire make, with in-depth video tutorials with our founder Hetty, with practical tips from her 12 year career as a fashion designer.
How long is the Celia Dress?
The Celia is a midi-to-ankle length dress. The finished length will vary by height - taller makers may find it sits at midi length, shorter makers may find it closer to the ankle. We recommend trying the dress on before hemming to confirm the length you want.
