We’re so excited to introduce our first ever reversible sewing patterns, the Reversible Quilt Jacket and Hooded Scarf.
When we were planning our autumn/winter patterns, we wanted to find a gap in our range and fill it with a brand new skill. Quilting is completely new for us, and these comfy, casual pieces are quite different from our usual tailored makes. Imagine pairing them up for maximum cosiness as the chillier days and nights draw in...
Designed to Be Truly Reversible
A key part of the design process in the studio was working out whether we could make a really nice reversible piece of clothing. These are our first reversible garments, and both the jacket and the hooded scarf can be worn either way, which is a great extra styling option.
Importantly, neither piece compromises on function. We think some reversible garments aren’t really that reversible, or feel a bit gimmicky. Our pattern cutter Hanni cleverly figured out a pattern that genuinely works, with usable two-way patch pockets on both sides, and looks just as beautiful whichever way you wear it.
Pattern Options
We had a lot of fun sampling these in the studio. With reversible pieces the design options are almost limitless, and depending on the fabrics you choose, each side can have a completely different mood for different occasions.
- Colour: choose three different colours for the outer, inner and binding to create a completely different feel inside and out.
- Pockets: choose two-way patch pockets or single patch pockets. You might not want pockets on the inside, so that’s optional.
- Fastenings: we’ve included options that work both ways, with invisible poppers or a button-up version.
- Quilting design: we tried out diamond, square and stripe options, but you can design your own. You could even go totally freehand if you’re feeling brave!
Thank you to Ray Stitch for the beautiful blue and purple fabric we used here for this version of the Reversible Quilt Jacket. We found the lovely plaid binding at Merchant and Mills.
Quilting Brings Any Fabric to Life
One of the nicest surprises when sewing the samples was the impact of quilting. The technique adds depth, texture and interest to even the plainest (or cheapest) fabric. We made this white and red version using very purse-friendly deadstock (surplus) fabric and were really pleased with the outcome. If you have some uninspiring fabric in your stash that you’ve been ignoring, quilting might be just what it needs.
Our top tip for shopping deadstock: there are lots of lovely stockists out there, including our local neighbours The New Craft House. Take a tour of their London shop with us here and search our Fabric Map for local suggestions from our community here.
Sew Along with the Workshop
Once you’ve got the hang of quilting and binding, you simply repeat them across the whole garment, which makes for a genuinely meditative, relaxed make. Intermediate sewists will enjoy it as a calm, rewarding project. For beginners, all that repetition is the real gift: you get to practise sewing precise straight lines again and again until it becomes second nature.
If you’d like support as you build your confidence, you can sew along with Hetty’s in-depth video tutorials in the Reversible Quilt Jacket Workshop. It includes 2 hours of video covering 10 techniques, broken into short chapters so you can pause, rewatch and get your head around each one. You also get lifetime access, so you can return whenever you like.
What you’ll learn:
- Quilting
- Binding
- Sewing in straight lines with precision
- Two-way patch pockets (optional)
- Invisible poppers or button fastenings
You’ll finish the Workshop with a fully reversible quilted jacket, and if you’re feeling inspired, you can put your new skills to work on the matching hooded scarf. Get a full overview of the Workshop and sign up here.
Beginner Friendly
Both patterns are suitable for beginners and intermediate sewists. For beginners, we’d suggest choosing the single patch pocket, which is definitely beginner friendly. The two-way patch pocket is more of an intermediate skill, but it’s really achievable if you sew along to the Workshop.
We can’t wait to see all of your colour combinations and quilting designs!
