The 2026 Capsule Course
We are so excited to launch our most ambitious Capsule Course yet!
If you’re new to Modern Sewing Co., the Capsule Course is our annual best seller that will teach you how to sew a curated capsule of 4 exceptional garments at your own rhythm, and you'll join a cohort of passionate sewers from all over the world.
This is our fourth capsule course, so we've gone the extra mile to not only include classic Modern Sewing Co. pieces but also exclusive new designs that include features and skills we’ve never focused on before!
What the Capsule Course prides itself in is how accessible it is for all sewing abilities. We want to encourage beginners to think big and use our teaching to tackle complex pieces from the get go.
I firmly believe that experience comes into play in how you handle your machine, iron and fabric - all of which are covered thoroughly in the course with plenty of opportunity to practice and perfect to industry standards.
With our workshops, additional photo guides and a community of sewists to encourage your progress, the Capsule Course is the perfect way to improve your skills and create high-quality garments you will wear for years to come.
What's new?
Previous cohort members will be excited to hear we've revised our course page so that your projects are broken up in chronological order each month, making your journey as seamless as possible.
But what makes the Capsule Course so special is that the course additions, with brand new photo-guides and pattern add ons are exclusive to the cohort only and won’t be made available outside of the course.
I hope you enjoy reading about the course below and if you already have any of the workshops or patterns that are included, there are discount codes at the end of this email.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Hetty
Month 1: Celia Dress
We historically always include a shirt, trousers and coat but we wanted to expand and include a dress in this capsule to focus on new skills and shake things up - especially since we have a lovely community of sewists who’ve joined the capsule every year.
We chose the Celia Dress because it has a broad range of accessible sewing skills which give a really good starting point to the course.
The classic construction details like the lapel and two piece sleeve give beginners the chance to immediately challenge themselves with high quality features and get stuck in on the offset.
We have made a brand new workshop for the Celia Dress which will guide you through the make - which is exclusive to Capsule Course members until summer!
Month 2: Over Shirt
Our Capsule Course staple is always a shirt but we really wanted to reimagine what we could create with the Over Shirt as our basis.
It’s been part of previous courses but we gave ourselves the challenge to turn it on its head, and created a version that is a selvedge denim jacket!
We’re keeping the best elements of the over shirt pattern - the cuff and plackets, collar and collar stand and the yoke. We’ve added beautifully reimagined front pockets and the new front yoke and hem facing really lean into the classic denim jacket look.
This month, we’ll explore the qualities of denim fabric. Selvedge denim is often used for trousers but we wanted to explore using it for a shirt as an optional feature.
It’s been lovely to incorporate the qualities and quirks of the fabric into the design, though you’re more than welcome to use any fabric you want!
Month 3: Darcy Coat
And last, but certainly not least, is the showstopper - the Trench Darcy Coat! The Darcy Coat over the last 2 years has become our most loved piece, and to celebrate our recent launch of the Darcy Coat workshop, we decided to give it a glow up.
We’ve been really inspired by creating a classic trench coat and we had a lot of fun designing storm shield pattern pieces along with the additional back vent to give the garment a classic British spin.
We’ve played with contrast fabric on this garment which really livens it up. We absolutely love the result and the impact it has on the overall outfit and we're so excited to see how the cohort play with fabric and colour for this piece.
The garment may look really complex but it is totally achievable with the online workshop and steps we provide, and you’ll be more than warmed up by the time you get to it!
Extra project: Day Tote
Our warm-up project has always been the Frida Shirt in previous courses, but this year we wanted to create an entire outfit by including the Day Tote, which launched last summer.
It’s a great warm up project and beautiful piece to round off the range. We’d suggest you make your Day Tote not necessarily at the start of your course but whenever you need to decompress and get back into the swing of making your garments.
