New Year, New Skills
The start of the new year becomes inundated with goals and resolutions to plan ahead and make the most of a fresh slate. In the studio, our resolutions amongst the team included
- only buying 10 clothing items over the whole year (Hanni succeeded in this last year and is planning to continue her streak into 2026)
- cutting down on screen time and using that time for creative output
- saying no to too many plans and yes to quiet, rejuvenating time at home
If you're also looking to reduce fast fashion consumption or consumption in general, to spend less time on your phone and more time being creative, and practicing self care and gaining new skills... sewing is a great way of putting these resolutions into action - no bias there!
But a resolution is more than a statement in mid air. If you're thinking about the 'how' then using measurable goals such as "do 10,000 steps a day" instead of "get healthy" will make it more likely to succeed.
While picking a pattern is a great start, many of us will have felt the sudden drop of momentum that comes after finishing that first project. Life gets in the way and that garment you made sits out of place in your wardrobe and rarely gets worn.
The more longterm approach to sewing more consistently across the year would be joining our upcoming Capsule Course, and this is why:
Framework
The Capsule Course provides a consistent framework that challenges you across months, so you can make progress and a long-term commitment to multiple projects and not drop off after February.
A few people have been asking about the timeline and whether they need to stay on track and the answer is no - you can sew at your own pace and you’ll have all of the content to keep after the course has finished so you could even spread the course over the year.
If you relate to the need for a framework to follow through on a resolution, you may not be surprised that 23% of people give up or break their new year’s resolution within the first week. And by February, 43% of people expect to have given up on their goals completely.
Accountability
Our exclusive forum creates a really lovely community of sewists to keep you accountable and motivated to sew. We'll also be on hand for live feedback in case you need extra support.
It's so exciting to see we’ve got lots of makers from all over the world signed up already and we’ll be launching the course forum at the end of the month too so you can start to meet one another!
Curation + intentional making
We've put in the work to make these designs wearable and timeless, so you can feel confident in making garments you'll actually wear for years to come. The Capsule garments have optional pattern additions and fabric choices that give you the scope to create with your wardrobe front of mind. It's such a creatively-fulfilling project and we're so excited to see what the cohort create!
Learning
Along with the additional pattern options, we've added extra photo-guides and a brand new workshop so that all the skills you need to perfect these garments are covered. The focus of the course is honing in on transferable skills and construction techniques that you'll be able to apply to garments in the future - giving you the motivation to keep improving and keep making throughout the year.
If you’re ready to carve out the time for yourself and create the momentum you aim for this year, the 2026 Capsule Course is open for enrolling until the end of the month.

Note:
After the launch of our Capsule Course on the 1st January, we had some issues with our discount codes for previous purchases. We've done our best to iron out these issues and we've changed the discount codes to work with your accounts.
If you have previously purchased one of the pieces included in the course, we have made new codes. Please make sure that you've logged into your account first.
Some of you also spotted a price discrepancy in our launch email which was due to a syncing glitch and we are so sorry for any confusion this may have caused. The correct price is on the website and this email.
If you still have trouble with the discount codes, please drop us an email at hello@modernsewingco.com.
