The weekend long read.
If you’ve been following us for a while you might have seen that we launched a 6 Month Capsule Course back in January. Following from an idea last year, I had started to plan my sewing projects as a body of work instead of looking at them as individual garments.
I started to feel like my own personal sewing had a randomness to it - I’d pick a pattern and some fabric and off I went. Some items, no matter how lovely, would hardly get worn. If the colour or style was wildly different to other pieces in my wardrobe I’d find it hard to get multiple outfit combinations. I value clothes that I can wear into the ground and if that isn't the case then it starts to feel unsustainable.
Added to this I was really starting to miss curating fabrics and designs which was a really important job that came with my previous business. It was the most rewarding and creative aspect of working in fashion and it didn’t seem to have much of a place in home sewing.
Pondering on both of these things I thought maybe I could start approaching my sewing from a ‘capsule collection’ point of view. Everything would be curated to be worn together and create multiple outfit combinations with just 6 pieces. I'd be able to pack those 6 pieces in a bag for a weekend away and not need much else. It seemed a great solution for making clothes that would be instantly wearable.
So off I went. I started my first capsule in the spring of 2023 and I shared the whole process in my newsletters and blog (you can catch up here). Not only was it SUCH a fun project, it was a huge hit with all of you. I followed up with an autumn capsule and then in January of this year I launched our first Capsule Course where 67 wonderful makers from all over the world have been steadily making one garment a month. The mission is to create their own 6 piece capsules that are thoughtfully considered and personalised to each individual.
We’re coming to the end of the course and it’s been so lovely. I feel like we’ve all got to know each other; we’ve all helped solve each others issues by giving advice in the course forum and then we’ve all cheered when the final garment gets posted in the monthly makes page.
I’ll be revisiting the course to share the brilliant garments people have made. But first I thought I’d share my own capsule. I won’t be going into detail about each garment as that is part of the course content but you can see the collection as a whole and how it caters to different needs and scenarios but still works together cohesively.
Keep an eye out for the follow up newsletter where I’ll be sharing amazing makes from the course! And I'll be sharing info about the next course I'm planning soon as well.
