Marketing & Communications Assistant (Part Time)
Modern Sewing Co. is a small Hackney based business which provides high quality PDF patterns and online workshops to home sewers all over the world. Our brand ethos is that anyone can sew beautiful, high quality clothing from their own home and we make it achievable and exciting to do that.
Digital marketing is the heart and soul of the Modern Sewing Co. - it’s the one and only way we communicate with our customers, create excitement and generate sales. The mood of the marketing comes directly from the founder, Hetty, who shares her sewing projects and mission in great detail. The genuine passion behind her marketing has helped to build a natural momentum and loyal following. Customers regularly comment that they look forward to receiving our newsletters and get a lot of value from them.
We are looking to expand on our current marketing and add more creative, relevant and regular posts to help grow our audience. Our team is small and dynamic and there is real opportunity to work creatively within a growing business.
Your responsibilities as a Marketing & Communications Assistant will include:
- Creating engaging and creative content for social media and our website
- Sharing sewing tips and advice with our community
- Keep up to date on the latest social media trends
- Content planning and brainstorming
- Maintain consistent brand messaging throughout all platforms
- Create email campaigns to target specific customers
- Improve and maintain highly engaging email flows
- Answering customer service emails
- Contributing to the community forum to answer questions and share advice
Customer service emails

- Create photo & video content for instagram
- brainstorm engaging content ideas based around sewing
- plan a weekly content schedule
- film the content and edit the results to create high quality, creative videos
TikTok
- oversee building an audience on a new channel
- create video content suitable for a TikTok audience
- plan a weekly content schedule
- film the content and edit the results to create high quality, creative videos
(There is some overlap with instagram for this)
Klaviyo
- write short newsletters set on the brief each week
- update email flows where needed
SEO
- Write short blog posts around simple sewing techniques, tips and tricks
- sew & photograph examples to accompany text
Outreach & collaborations (PR)
- contacting newspapers, magazines, writers & editors
- communicating with influencers to set up collaborations
Your Skills:
We're looking to hire someone with the following skills:
- Must have an understanding of sewing to be able to create sewing based content
- This role doesn’t require technical photography and videography skills as we have simple cameras to capture content. But it’s important you have a good eye and an understanding of our aesthetic to be able to create really high quality content.
- Good written communication skills for writing short blogs as well as answering customer emails
- Basic editing skills for photo and video
- Someone who's a motivated, organised and a self starter with a positive working attitude!
Hours & pay:
- Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in our Hackney studio
- Answering customer service emails every weekday (working remotely for an hour or two on Monday and Friday)
- £150 per day + £20ph for customer service emails
