Deep Dive: The New Capsule Course

A closer look at our new Capsule Course

I’m so happy to have our new Capsule Course live at long last! We worked so hard on this throughout autumn so it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to share it with you all.

I thought I'd share a bit about the thinking behind the course which is the 3rd edition of our Capsule Course series.

When we were brainstorming ideas for this series I had initially thought to branch out from the theme of classic tailoring and to look at covering some of our other patterns. Our previous courses have seen a focus on classic tailoring and we so weighed up whether to do something different and venture into dresses, jumpsuits or jerseys.

After some thinking we thought it was important to offer one more course focusing on tailoring to give those who've been wanting to join us a chance to learn these skills before we move on. With January being such a productive time of year for home sewing, it felt right to work with a theme that encompasses our core brand values of classic construction techniques and timeless design.

And what could be more classic and timeless than abeautifully made suit?

The Spring Suit course is here to give you a thorough understanding of high quality sewing as well as giving you 3 functional pieces that you’ll be able to wear together.
So how does it work?

The course is broken down into 4 months which includes 1 month of preparation and 3 x one month projects. January is our preparation month and you’ll be able to enrol until the 31st and after that sales will close and we’ll get started.

Skill level wise we’ll be looking at some advanced construction techniques however I always want everything to be open to beginners. You’ll find all of the project information on the product page as well as notes on adaptations for beginners. I fully welcome everyone to join, no matter your skill level. That being said if you have little to no experience you will need to commit much more time to allow yourself to learn and sew at a slower pace.

I’ve touched on the projects below but as I said you’ll find the full write up on the product page. Before I let you scroll I thought I’d share my own thoughts on what we made to share a more personal reflection.
When choosing the fabrics for this course I wanted to have a matching jacket and trouser and for it to feel fresh, lightweight and ‘spring like’ as well as versatile and timeless. I’ve always loved the range of sanded twills by Merchant & Mills and so I pondered over their colour range for a while. I also started to look for a shirting fabric and since I’ve worn my blue pinstripe poplin shirt to death I was instantly drawn to this striped seersucker from the Cloth House. This worked particularly well with the Oliver Tan 8oz sanded twill so my fabric choices came together quite swiftly.

I wanted to add a little ‘pop’ of deeper colour and I so I chose a thicker striped green from the cloth house the pocket bags of the jacket. This makes the inside of the garment almost as beautiful as the outside which is exactly what we’re trying to achieve. Thank you to Merchant & Mills and the Cloth House for making such beautiful fabrics and providing the materials for these garments.

I hope you enjoy reading about the course and please let me know if you have any questions, you can just hit reply to this email!

Preparation Month:

Once you're enrolled on the course you'll have until 31st January to get yourself set up and ready to start sewing. This will include gathering your tools, curating your fabrics, choosing your patterns and familiarising yourself with our 'Getting Started' videos.

You'll also have the option to sew the warm up project of the Frida Shirt. This is recommended for beginners as the workshop will give you a great foundation of skills to use in the rest of the course.

Month 1:

The Shirt Project

From 1st February we'll be focussing on making a shirt using classic construction techniques and we'll be showing you how to add an additional jet pocket with a button loop.

Beginners can simply focus on making a simple shirt following the workshop and save the jet pocket tutorial for a future project.

Pattern options: We've worked with the Classic Shirt but you could choose the Unisex Shirt or Over Shirt instead.

Month 2:

The Trouser Project

This month we'll be focussing on making a robust and timeless pair of trousers. For some this will start with making a toile and we'll give personalised feedback on how to tweak your toile to fit better.

We're taking tailoring details to the max with this project with guidance on a stitch free waistband with internal binding, back welt pockets, binding on the hem turn up and a beautifully finished fly with binding details. We'll also show you how to add a front pleat to your trousers.

Pattern options: We've worked with the Worker Trousers but you could choose the Daphne Trousers instead.

Month 3:

The Jacket Project

Lastly we'll be making a beautifully finished un-lined jacket with internal binding features. You'll be shown how to sew perfect welt pockets along with additional finishing techniques.

Pattern options: We've used the Potters Jacket but you could opt for the Darcy Coat or Jaime Jacket
