I’m making my 4th pair now. The fit on me is perfect with only a little lengthening of the legs. I’ve made them in linen, wide wale corduroy, heavy denim (welt pockets) and this one will be a stretch twill. The first pair I tried the button placket, and while that worked great, I’ve gone with zips for the rest. The latest will have cuffs and a lot of top stitching.
I'm very proud of the trousers I've made, they look really good. I enjoy learning the techniques that elevate the garments. I did have problems with the waistband though. I made a toile and added the waistband and that fitted but when I made the actual garment that had the button stand my waistband was a few centimetres short. I agonised over this for a few days and still don't know where I went wrong. I fixed it by extending one piece, another learning experience, and the finished trousers are great and fit well.
Hi Jackie, I'm happy to hear you're proud of your Worker Trousers! The waistband being too short is a more common issue with trouser making than you would think. Often it's down to the fabric at the top of the trousers stretching out, or the waistband shrinking when it's pressed and fused. I would recommend checking each piece against the paper pattern to find out where the discrepency is. I hope that helps!
I bought my worker trousers pattern about 18 months ago but was a bit reluctant to start because I thought I would find them too complicated. When I found out there was a course I was keen to give it a go as this was also my first online course. Each day I would do a section which were easy to pick up on the course as they were marked “pockets” or “waistband” for example. I had been fearful of the French seams on the pocket bags but was absolutely thrilled with the results, that was one of the first sections so it gave me a lot of confidence. The trousers have been very successful and I am now confident enough to try other more challenging patterns.
