3 Month Capsule Course

£185.00
OptionFull Course with Workshops

Following on from our 6 Month Capsule Course we're excited to introduce our next instalment: the 3 Month Capsule Course.

The 3 Month Capsule Course is an online, self directed course that will give you the tools to create 3/4 exceptional garments over the course of 3 months. We’ll be working with our existing patterns and workshops and giving you exclusive step-by-step guides to help you make a capsule built around your own wardrobe.

This course is available to enrol on until 30th September and all course participants must be subscribed to our mailing list in order to receive the course communication. Please send any questions you have about the course to hello@modernsewingco.com and we'll be happy to help.

If you haven't heard about our Capsule Courses before you can read more about the concept here

If you already own some of the patterns and workshops you can opt for 'course only' which will give you full course access without having to re-buy anything you already own.

  • Monthly course content
  • Access to the course forum

Menswear Option:

If you’d like to use Menswear patterns for the course you can choose the Unisex Shirt, Men’s Worker Trousers and Jaime Jacket. In month 3 we'll be making a fully lined coat, however as the Jaime Jacket does not have a lining pattern you can make an unlined version or we can advise you on how to make an adapted lined version.

Projects

September: During September we’ll be taking time to settle in, for everyone to gather their tools and brush up on techniques shown in the free 'Getting Started' videos. You’ll be curating your capsule by choosing fabrics and trimmings and you’ll have the chance to do the warm-up project with the Frida Shirt Workshop.

  • Course content: A guide on planning your capsule collection (long read email), Frill Collar Guide (photo guide)

October: The course properly kicks off in October with the Over Shirt project (the Unisex Shirt can also be used). This month focuses on working with wool to create a cosy shirt with a full lining. You’ll be able to follow the online workshop to sew your shirt to a high standard and we’ll also be giving you tips on how to work with wool and making your own lining pattern. There will be the option to personalise your make with different pocket designs and to finish we’ll be looking at hand sewn button holes used on tailored wool garments.

If you’re a beginner we recommend working with a very lightweight wool or a cotton fabric so you can make your shirt without a lining (you can save the lining content for a future date).

  • Course content: Working with wool (short video), How to add lining to an Over Shirt (step-by-step video and photo guide), How to Hand Sew Button Holes (video), How to Personalise Your Pockets (free pattern downloads and a written guide)

November: Moving on to trousers, we’ll be making the Sunday Trackies with a few tweaks. We’ve chosen this trouser pattern to allow everyone the time and space to focus on making 2 lined garments without worrying about trouser fitting. This ‘easy fit’ option will be made from from woven fabric instead of jersey and we’ll show you how to make fit amendments to make this work. To elevate this pattern we’ll be showing you how to add different pockets, from additional patch pockets to sleek back welt pockets.

If you'd prefer to sew a different trouser pattern you are welcome to do so.

  • Course content: How to grade your pattern (video), How to sew a trouser welt pocket (step-by-step video and photo guide), Personalising with pockets & binding (free pattern downloads and a photo guide)

December: Finishing off with a fully lined coat, this month we’ll be looking at how to sew gusset pockets to your coat (an optional feature) as well as giving you all the guidance you need to add a full lining to your outerwear. This is a bigger project so we recommend allowing yourself some extra time to make this piece.

  • Course content: How to sew a gusset pocket (step-by-step video and photo guide plus free pocket pattern download), How to add a lining to a jacket (detailed step-by-step video and photo guide)
Course Structure

What you need to do (aside from the sewing projects):

  • make sure you have the correct tools (sewing machine, iron, ironing board, needles, pins, fabric scissors, paper scissors, small scissors/snips, unpicker, tape measure, tailors chalk)
  • visualise your own personal capsule by choosing your preferred patterns and choosing fabrics that go well together
  • give yourself time to sew each month - we recommend at 2-4 full days depending on your skill level

Preparation Month: The course will be open to enrol in for the month of September and once you’re signed up you’ll have the rest of the month to prepare. This will include choosing your fabrics, materials and patterns and if you’re a beginner we recommend sewing the Frida Shirt as a warm up project.

The Course: On the 1st of each month you’ll receive an email with all of your course content for the month ahead. You’ll also receive the content in a downloadable PDF to keep for future use. You'll have the month to complete your garment although there's no pressure to stick to the one month target.

The Forum: The forum is where we’ll exchange questions, give support and share photos of our final makes. The forum will be checked every weekday by Hetty and Emily and we’ll be able to answer questions publicly so everyone can learn from them, although personal support is also available through direct message.

Skill Level

Skill level: Suitable for committed beginners and intermediate sewers.

We want sewing great garments to be achievable from the get-go so this course is open to committed beginners. You’ll be able to sew 4 high quality pieces by following our workshops and guides. Beginners will need to allow plenty of time for sewing each month and follow the slightly easier options for each garment.

This might look like: sewing the Frida Shirt with the workshop (excluding the frill collar), sewing the Over Shirt with the workshop (without a lining), sewing the Sunday Trackies, sewing your lined coat with patch pockets or gusset pockets (as opposed to welt pockets). You’ll learn lots of new skills and you can save any course content you don’t use for future makes. It's a great way to really get off the ground with your sewing and use the community forum to connect with other makers and feel supported.

Sizing & Fit

Sizing: UK Sizes 6 - 28 for womens patterns and XS2 - XL3 for mens patterns. All patterns have PDF Layers.

How to use PDF Patterns

Where to find your patterns & workshops:

After purchasing you'll find your PDF pattern download and any workshops in your account page. Simply log in (or create an account using the same email address used to purchase) and click the account button in the top right corner. The most up to date versions of the patterns will always be available from within your account. If any changes are made to the pattern or instructions you’ll receive an email notification.

Opening your files:

Some older Window computers have problems opening zip files. If this is the case, you can use the free programme 7-Zip to open your files.

How to print your pattern:

You have two options for printing out your pattern.

1. You can get it printed in A0 at a printing shop or sewing pattern company. Search for "sewing pattern printing company" to find a company that does this in your region.

2. Or you can print it yourself on a home printer in A4 or US Letter format and then tile the pages together using tape.

Using PDF layers:

All of our patterns come with PDF layers so you can select the sizes you want to view and print. To do this you’ll need a PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader (this is free to download).

More details on printing, using PDF layers and general preparation tips can be found on the ‘Using Our Patterns’ document (download for free here). This document comes with all of our patterns.
