Our Capsule Courses

Our Capsule Courses

Sew one garment a month with a community of makers.

The Capsule Course was born of the want to make our sewing projects more cohesive, wearable and sustainable by sewing pieces that have a true place and function in our wardrobes.

It's so easy to get lured by lovely sewing patterns and fabrics without really considering if they will work well for us. We spend money and time sewing things that don’t get worn as much as they should.

The Capsule Course will get you to approach your sewing projects with curation at the forefront. The idea is to make a small capsule of garments that will be immediately worn together. You’ll learn the skills to make these pieces to a high standard and be shown how to put your own unique stamp on each garment you make.

Being part of a cohort of makers from all corners of the world has the added benefit of encouraging you to carve out time for yourself and your hobby. Connecting and supporting each other through the course forum and creating long lasting clothes together.

How it works:

Plan your capsule

Your preparation month will be spent choosing your fabrics, trimmings and thinking about your own design details.

The course structure will give you an idea of which pattern is best for each month but you’ll have the freedom to add your own stamp on to each piece you make.

Sew a garment a month

Whether you're on the 6 Month Capsule Course or the 3 Month Capsule Course you'll sew one garment each month to build up your own mini collection.

You’ll receive course guidance on the 1st of each month which will include step-by-step photo guides, videos and additional free pattern downloads.

Community forum

One of the best things about the course is the community forum where course attendants from all over the world share what they've made each month and ask each other for advice.

You’ll be able to ask questions and share photos of your makes on the monthly make boards.

Maker Meets Designer

There are few things more satisfying than sitting down with some fabric swatches to design your own mini collection. It’s an exciting, creative way to approach sewing but we also think it’s so much more sustainable.

You'll be sewing garments that have been carefully considered to work well together. The aim is to create a capsule of pieces that can be worn together so you can get as much wear from them as possible. This doesn't happen by accident, the planning and designing stage is crucial to create garments that will last for years, maybe decades.

We'll be encouraging you to take time planning your collection which will include choosing your fabrics, trimmings and patterns as well as thinking about any additional design details you want to include.

Our Capsule:

Here's an example of what a capsule might look like. This is a summer capsule designed around the gaps Hetty had in her wardrobe while still making sure it worked together to create lots of lovely outfits.

Thoughts from our community:

the 6 month capsule, 2024

If you are looking to extend your skills and gain some sewing motivation I would recommend the capsule course. Having a project guide to follow gives you a clear goal each month and a sense of accomplishment when you complete a garment. The workshops really help as they show detailed step-by-step instructions at a perfect pace.

An amazing opportunity to develop as a sewist in a supportive and creative environment, growing and advancing through the projects to hone techniques and learn new ones.

A great opportunity to plan and focus on sewing projects, learn new techniques from the excellent workshops and to engage with lovely sewists from all over the world - I would highly recommend this course.

I'm so sad that this course has ended. It challenged me to make all sorts of things that were out of my comfort zone and then held my hand through to completion. Really well presented skills and a warm, supportive community.

I absolutely recommend the course to anyone who'd like to develop their technical and curation skills, and to do so alongside a fantastic community of sewists all sharing their advice, concerns, wins and fails. I'm already looking forward to the next one!

If you want to make time for sewing, learn new techniques, and make clothes you'll wear, then this is the course for you. Whether you are a beginner or experienced you'll benefit from this Capsule Wardrobe course.

The 6 Month Capsule Course has given me a whole new approach for making garments. In the past I have made garments that I love but had nothing to wear with it or garments that I needed in my wardrobe but wasn't excited about the garment when I was finished. The process of building this Capsule Wardrobe make me excited about putting together a group of garments that I could wear in multiple ways. I'll definitely continue to take this approach!

It was so great to make a capsule perfect for me and to get the help and inspiration from Hetty and the fellow sewists in the forum along the way. I can’t wait to see what course will come next!

I was a bit unsure about investing in this course as I already had the jersey and Cara patterns, but it has definitely been worth the money. The videos are fantastic, the extra input in the monthly emails have been great and I have really enjoyed the supportive forum, which I hadn't even considered when I signed up. Highly recommended.

So many milestones were made on this course for me. It was the first time making a buttonhole, first collar, first time putting in a zip, first time grading between sizes, first time using an Overlocker. Everything was brand new and each month brought a new challenge. If you are a beginner, and want to learn to sew, this course is the perfect start.

FAQs

How does the Capsule Course work?

The capsule course is a self guided course with projects set each month.

Preparation Month:

The course will be open to join for one month and once you’ve enrolled you’ll have the rest of the month to start preparing. This will involve choosing your fabrics, materials and patterns and doing the optional preparation month project. This is a slightly easier initial project following an online workshop which is recommended for beginners.

Monthly Projects:

On the 1st of each month you'll receive your project for the month ahead. You'll be making your garments using the PDF pattern instructions along with the additional course guides and videos. Some months also come with an accompanying online workshop. You’ll be able to post any questions on the course forum as well as share your finished make at the end of the month.

What does the course content include?

Patterns & online workshops: you’ll receive the patterns and any accompanying online workshops

Introductory video: at the start of each month you’ll receive an introductory video explaining the project for the month and touching on areas you’ll be focussing on

Monthly content: each month there will be a different theme for learning. For example, one month might be focussed on how to make a lined jacket. In this instance the additional course content will include step-by-step videos and photos on how to sew a fully lined coat.

Fitting advice will be touched on, with the option to discuss more in-depth. There will also be free pattern downloads for features such as pockets.

Each month is different and we’ll be planning the course to try to give a well rounded making experience.

Access to the forum: the forum is where we’ll be sharing our makes and answering each others questions. Hetty and Emily will both be active in the course forum to answer questions and we will be checking in every day (aside from weekends).

The monthly content will be delivered via email and you’ll also get a pdf download to keep for future use.

Is it suitable for beginners?

The capsule course is suitable for ambitious beginners and intermediate sewers. We want our courses to be fully accessible and beginners will have the tools to start sewing at this high level. It will require time commitment and focus from early sewers but it's absolutely achievable.

If you’d prefer slower progression you might like to start with individual workshops and build up to doing a capsule course. Check out our Beginners Guide for guidance on how to get started.

What if I already own some of the patterns and workshops?

If you already own some of the patterns and workshops included in the course you can buy the 'course only' option which will give you full course access.

Do I have to stay on track with the timeline?

This is your sewing project so you can take it at your own pace. If you’re not able to complete the projects each month you can finish them in your own time. You’ll have the patterns, workshops and course guidance to refer back to after the course has finished.

Will there be contact with Hetty?

This is a self guided course and our focus is on giving you great quality content to help you create your garments and keep for future use. Support is provided through the course forum where Hetty and Emily will both be active to answer questions. We will be checking in every day aside from weekends.
